E-Commerce Statistics

Buying and selling on the Internet has become big business. Forester Research estimates that more than $1 trillion in U.S. goods and services will be traded on the Internet by 2002. In 1999, e-commerce was already a $24 billion-a-year business. Consumer only e-commerce is estimated to rise to $75 billion by 2003.

The number of e-business Web Sites is expected to top 1 million by 2003, up from 700,000 in 1999.(IDC)

A study by Andersen Consulting indicates that more than 25 percent of the purchase transactions at online stores never go through.

A study by Cahners-Instat Group predicts that 14 million people will purchase Internet access in the States by the end of 2000 and of this number, 43 percent will purchase PC's as Internet access devices.

The surge in use is expected to fuel the domestic Internet access market and revenue from dial-up access alone will be worth USD2.2 billion. Price will remain the most important criteria when choosing an ISP and consumers will generally not swayed by ISPs offering value-added services.

US Internet users are highly educated for the most part, 72 percent of college graduates are online while only 26.7 percent of those with high school education only are online.

Price and complicated technology are no longer serious obstacles to gaining access, and many of those who are not online are simply not interested in the Internet. Cahners In-Stat Group believe that ISPs have to persuade this minority that the Internet is a ‘must-have’ technology.

The gender gap will have well and truly disappeared by the end of 2000 when 49.1 percent of US users will be female. In addition, the study also found that on average consumers spent 12.2 hours online per week.
